General Information

Faculty of Literature at Fırat University was established according to the Law No. 1873 on April 1, 1975. The Faculty Board had its first meeting on December 5, 1975. As the result of the meeting, a decision was made to open "Department of Turkish Language and Literature".

The Department of Turkish Language and Literature was the first department opened under the Faculty of Literature. Next, the Department of Anthropology was opened in the academic session 1976/1977. On 25th of February 1980, a decision was made that the Faculty of Literature to compose 10 departments which were the Department of Anthropology, the Department of Archaeology, the Department of History of Art, the Department of Geography, the Department of the Ancient Languages of Asia Minor, the Department of Librarianship, the Department of History, the Department of Social Sciences, the Department of Turkish Language and Literature, the Department of Foreign Languages.

The Department of History accepted 20 students in the academic session 1980/1981. Later, the Faculty of Literature had carried out the educational process with the Department of Anthropology, the Department of History and the Department of Turkish Language and Literature.

The Faculty of Literature was merged with the Faculty of Science and they were transformed to "Faculty of Science and Literature" with the approval of the change of Decree No.  41 related to the Council of Higher Education Institutions and with the law No. 2809 dated 28/03/1983.

The name of the Department of Anthropology was changed to the Department of Sociology. The Department of Geography was opened within our Faculty in 1990.

The Department of Western Languages and Literatures' classes commenced, first time, in the academic session 2005/2006 with 30 students.

The Faculty of Science and Literature was closed upon the Council of Ministers' decision Law No. 2010/175 published in an official government journal No. 27518 dated 11th of March 2010. Upon the closure of the Faculty of Science and Literature, as a replacement, the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences have been founded.

Currently, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences sustains its academic activities by six departments which are the Department of Western Languages and Literatures, the Department of Modern Turkish Language Dialects and Literatures, the Department of Turkish Language and Literature, the Department of History, the Department of Geography, the Department of Sociology. The Department of Archaeology, the Department of History of Art, the Department of Eastern Languages and Literatures are already opened but have not yet received students. Also, our Faculty is working on opening the Department of Slavic Languages & Literatures as soon as possible.
